Patch or Replace? How to Know When Your Driveway Needs Full Replacement

Why Patches Often Fail

Every homeowner with a cracked driveway asks the same question: can this just be patched, or does it need to be replaced? Here’s how we actually evaluate it on-site. A patch might work if you’re dealing with a single, isolated crack under a quarter-inch wide, with no visible sinking or unevenness at the crack, and the rest of the concrete is otherwise in good shape without widespread surface deterioration. On the other hand, you’re likely looking at full replacement if you see multiple cracks running in different directions, since that usually means the base underneath has failed, or if any section of the driveway is sitting lower than the rest, which points to the base washing out or settling. Cracks that keep coming back after being patched, surface flaking or crumbling across large areas, and driveways older than 25-30 years without rebar reinforcement are all signs that a patch won’t hold.

The reason patches often fail is that they only address the surface — they don’t fix what caused the crack in the first place. If your base has settled, poor drainage is undermining the slab, or the original pour didn’t have proper reinforcement, a patch is just a temporary cover that will crack again, usually within a year or two, often right at the patch’s edge. A real replacement is a different story entirely. At JTL Contractor LLC, a full driveway replacement means complete demolition and haul-off of the old slab, compacted base preparation — the step most corner-cutting contractors skip — rebar reinforcement, and a professional 4-5 inch pour. Done right, it should last well over two decades.

So if you’ve patched the same spot more than once, or you’re seeing multiple cracks along with any sinking, it’s time to talk replacement instead of another temporary fix. We offer free site evaluations, and we’ll tell you honestly which one your driveway actually needs. Contact us for a free driveway evaluation.
